바이오 산업은 '제4의 물결' '4세대 기술혁명'이라고 불린다. 농업혁명이 먹고 사는 문제를 해결했고 산업혁명이 물질적 편리함을 해결했으며 정보화 혁명이 지적 욕구를 해결했다면, 이러한 과정을 거친 후의 우리에게 가장 큰 문제로 남아있는 소망-건강하게 오래 살고 싶다는-의 해결책으로 거론되고 있는 것이 바이오 혁명인 것이다. 바이오 산업은 제품별로 분류되는 다른 산업들과는 달리 기반기술의 발전 및 이의 적용 대상에 따라 그 응용 분야가 결정된다. 즉 생물의약, 생물화학, 농업, 식품, 환경, 에너지 등 바이오 기술이 이용되는 모든 분야가 바이오 산업으로 분류될 수 있는 것이다. 이를 좀더 세분화해서 들여다보면 생물의약 분야에서는 재조합 호르몬, 항암제, 성장인자류, 면역조절제 등이 이에 속하며, 생물화학 분야에서는 산업용 효소, 생분해성 고분자, 생활화학용품 등을 들 수 있고, 농업 분야에서는 유전자 조작 농산물이나 형질전환 동물, 기능성 식품, 발효식품 등을 포함시킬 수 있다. 또한 환경 분야에 있어서도 환경정화용 미생물제 등이 바이오 기술을 이용한 발명품이고, 에너지 분야에서도 연료용 에탄올이나 바이오 가스 등 대체 에너지를 개발하는데 바이오 기술이 활발하게 이용되고 있으며, 특히 해양 생물자원 및 신소재 등을 개발하는데 있어서 바이오 기술은 필수적이다.
